WHEEL BEARINGS  HISTORY


The taper roller bearing type

This older, but faithful style wheel bearing design is used on the non-driven front or rear wheels. The TRB was the most generic form of wheel bearing assembly used until front wheel drive became the norm.

Each TRB cone assembly consists of a tapered inner race, tapered rollers held in place by a cage and the cup or outer race. TRBs don’t have any integrated seals and are more expensive to produce then ball bearings. Used in pairs as an inner and outer cone unit, the TRB is much better at dealing with any small imperfections in alignment or fit and deals with the axial loads placed on the bearing surface better than a deep groove double ball bearing assembly.

Gen.2 Bearing

Made as an integral hub unit that improves ease of assembly, and increases durability and reliability.
Mainly used for Non-driven automotive applications.

Gen.3 Bearing

It has a hub made with an integral spline which improves ease of assembly, and increases durability and reliability. It also supports a built in sensor
Mainly used in both driven and non-driven automotive applications.

  • Scope of application : Driven/non-driven wheel

  • Pros & Cons : Improved ease of assembly, durability, and extended life due to the reduction of number of components


The ball wheel bearing type(Hub units)

Gen.1 Bearing

Easier assembly when compared to the single row (Gen. 0) bearings. As a unit, Gen 1 Ball Bearings have higher durability and increased reliability.
Mainly used for driven automotive applications. Double row angular contact ball bearings with an integral outer ring, a two-piece inner ring, balls, seals, cages, and grease.

  • Feature : Integral double row, greased, sealed and maintenance free.

  • Scope of application : Driving wheel, coupled driving wheel

  • Pros & Cons : Large dispersion of durability life(larger accumulated tolerance than counterparts) / less stiffness

Gen.2 Bearing

As an integrated hub unit, Gen 2 Ball Bearings are easier to assemble, have higher durability and increased reliability.
Mainly used for Non-driven automotive applications, it is composed of an outer ring with built in integrated hub, two inner rings, balls, seals, cages, and grease.

  • Feature : Integrated hub for outer ring

  • Scope of application : Coupled driving wheel

  • Pros & Cons : Ease of after-sales service / Low durability life owing to dispersion of screw torques

Gen.3 Bearing

It has a hub made with an integral spline, so it improves ease of assembly, increases durability and reliability. It can mount an ABS sensor and be used in both driven and Non-driven automotive applications.
It has an integrated outer ring and an integrated inner ring, balls, seals, cages and grease.

  • Feature : Inner ring integrated to hub shaft, outer ring flange to fix knuckle

  • Scope of application : Driving wheel, coupled driving wheel

  • Pros & Cons : Improved durability life, good stiffness, ease of after-sales service
